Cosplay involves dressing up in costumes and portraying characters from anime, video games, and comics. It’s an integral component of the geeky lifestyle. A majority of conventions -such as Anime Expo, which will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 1 – 4 — feature cosplay contests, and several people earn their living from creating costumes and dressing up.

Some fans have created a career from cosplay. Enako, Japan’s highest-paid cosplayer, is reported to earn more than 90,000 USD per month via photo shoots as well as paid appearances at conventions as well as similar occasions. It was announced recently that she will be collaborating with Inuyashacreator Rumiko Takahashi to create a special, collaborative photo book that will be available in Japan on Sept. 6.

Cosplay can be a costly pastime that could cost hundreds of dollars for just one costume. But, there are many ways to recreate beloved characters without spending a lot. The Thai-based cosplayer Low-Cost Cosplay is a master of inexpensive but innovative costumes, using common items as well as imaginative camera angles to create them. Notably, they used dozens of baby corn pieces to imitate Katsuki Bakugo’s fierce hairstyle, ketchup, and mayonnaise to capture the slender appearance of the Colossal Titan from Attack on Titan, and laundry products to fabricate the hairstyle that is blue and spiky of Son Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue transformation.
